Emeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy

About

Until July 2011, Alan Brian Carter held the historic Chair in Moral Philosophy at The University of Glasgow. Previous Chairs have included Adam Smith, Francis Hutcheson and Thomas Reid. Prior to moving to The University of Glasgow in 2005, Alan was Professor of Philosophy and Environmental Studies at The University of Colorado at Boulder, before that he was Head of the Philosophy Department  at Heythrop College (University of London), and his first academic post was Lecturer in Political Theory at University College Dublin. He has been a Visiting Professor at The University of British Columbia and The University of Bucharest, as well as Cole Scholar at The University of South Florida.

For several years he was Joint Editor of The Journal of Applied Philosophy.

Alan works principally in political philosophy, moral philosophy, and environmental philosophy. He is currently developing an environmentalist moral theory that is, normatively, value pluralist and, metaethically, error-theoretic projectivist.

Outside of academia, Alan has been on the Board of Director of Friends of the Earth (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), Friends of the Earth Scotland and Global Response. He has also been a trustee of Friends of the Earth Trust and Chair of The World Development Movement Scotland.

Alan now lives in Cornwall in the west of England, and when not engaged in academic pursuits or environmental campaigning, much of his time is spent composing and playing music, some of which can be found here:
