About

I am primarily interested in the history of linguistic variation across the Gaelic-speaking world. This means I work with all manifestations of the Gaelic languages (Archaic, Early and Modern Irish; Scottish Gaelic; Manx).

My doctoral dissertation examines the potential for early dialectal variation within Goidelic. As an off-shoot of my doctoral work I'm also interested in methods for measuring the linguistic proximity (especially at the lexical and phonetic levels) of contemporary Gaelic dialects/languages.

I have two main secondary interests, at the moment:

a) The lexicon of the Gaelic languages, more specifically lexical variation in Scottish Gaelic.

b) 18th century literary transmission in Irish, especially the transmission of the 'Caoine'.

My primary degree is in Modern Irish from NUI, Galway. I've also undertaken postgraduate research at NUI, Galway (Old Irish), University of Notre Dame (Comparative Literature), University of Edinburgh (Scottish Gaelic).
